review: concussion (2015)

SYNOPSIS (IMDB): In Pittsburgh, accomplished pathologist Dr. Bennet Omalu uncovers the truth about brain damage in football players who suffer repeated concussions in the course of normal play.

OVERALL IMPRESSION: 8.4/10

ACTING: 9.7/10
CINEMATOGRAPHY: 8.5/10
NARRATIVE/SCREENPLAY: 7/10 *
SCORE: 9/10

COMMENT: Concussion consisted of absolutely heart-wrenching performances, that were unfortunately forced through a rushed plot.

* Will Smith made me cry. But when does he not make me cry? While Concussion made a strong impression on me overall, I found the narrative rushed through quite a few things that weakened the effect quite a bit. The stories of the medical subjects, progression of Omalu’s romance subplot, and overall build of conflict between him and the NFL committee didn’t quite develop to the full effect. The strong acting performances truly saved this film. I am truly surprised Will Smith did not receive an Oscar nom for this one.
