review: the secret life of pets (2016)

SYNOPSIS (IMDB): A terrier named Max’s quiet life is upended when his owner takes in Duke, a stray, who Max instantly dislikes.

OVERALL IMPRESSION: 7.8/10

ACTING: 8/10
CINEMATOGRAPHY: 7/10
NARRATIVE/SCREENPLAY: 7/10 *
SCORE: 9/10

REVIEW IN ONE SENTENCE: With unrealistically high expectations, The Secret Life of Pets – while funny – was slightly underwhelming.

* This was a funny, easy, entertaining watch. The plot wasn’t what I had expected at all – as I hadn’t actually read the synopsis before going to watch the film – I had only seen the trailer. While a good story, I did want this film to focus more on the funny things pets do at home while owners are out, as the trailer portrayed, which is maybe why I felt a bit underwhelmed. Nevertheless, The Secret Life of Pets was still packed with good jokes and was a super fun watch.
