review: hell or high water (2016)

SYNOPSIS (IMDB): A divorced dad and his ex-con brother resort to a desperate scheme in order to save their family’s ranch in West Texas.

OVERALL IMPRESSION: 8.9/10

ACTING: 9/10
CINEMATOGRAPHY: 9/10
NARRATIVE/SCREENPLAY: 9/10 *
SCORE: 8/10

REVIEW IN ONE SENTENCE: A Western with surprisingly deep character and story development.

* This was surprisingly very good for me! Walking into this only reading the synopsis, and not watching the trailer, I expected Hell or High Water to be a typical Western – complete with over the top shootout scenes, long monologues of cowboys talking about shooting people, and unnecessary amounts of blood (ok maybe that’s just one filmmaker…). Anyways, this film was extremely well done, carried through by the equally as surprising, brilliant performance by Chris Pine.
